Mapping Process

Mapping a school or other facility involves a lot more than creating a few maps. The process starts with an up-to-date aerial or satellite photograph of the school grounds. When these photos are available, a Pre-Plan Tactical (or PPT) meeting is planned in the community. Facility officials, law enforcement and fire department incident and tactical commanders, and other emergency responders attend these meetings.

With all of these players in the room, a WASPC facilitator with critical incident response experience walks through the process of creating an incident response plan. The planning process uses the Rapid Responder software to place icons on the aerial map showing such critical locations as command posts, perimeter locations, and evacuation points.

In addition to serving as the basis for the rest of the critical incident planning process, the PPT meeting builds trust and collaboration between the school personnel and the emergency responders. Once these links are initiated, the rest of the process can go forward quickly.

The last step is to provide training for the school personnel and the emergency responders in the community. Some of the school training is provided via a "Webinar", an Internet-based seminar (see links below) . Training for the emergency responders is typically provided on-site.
